Realize This: You SHOULD be feeling energized in the morning
But sleep related issues are still so common in modern society
Meet Cortisol
Cortisol is your main stress hormone that increases adrenaline, boosts wakefulness and stimulates the sympathetic nervous system. Like any other physiological process, it follows a circadian rhythm.
Circadian rhythms are biological patterns that follow day and night cycles. They influence our hormones, the metabolism, and even our mood.
· Cortisol is low throughout the night so that we could raise melatonin – the sleep hormone.
· At dawn, cortisol starts rises and melatonin decreases at about 5-7 AM
· Cortisol peaks around 8-9 AM and then lowers back down slightly
· Cortisol rises again at 12-1 PM
This is your inner "WAKE YO ASS UP system!"
But if cortisol is rising, why do you still feel tired in the morning?
There are 2 reasons for it and they're both connected to each other.
· You suffer from a circadian mismatch and
· Your sleep quality at night sucks
Both of them prevent you from recharging your energy.
PROBLEM #1 - CIRCADIAN MISMATCH
Mismatches in circadian rhythms have been linked to insomnia, obesity, diabetes, depression, bipolar disorder and seasonal affective disorder.
The main cue that influences circadian rhythms is light, which turns on or off genes and other metabolic functions.
After sunset, when there's less light, the master clock inside your brain will tell it's time to start producing melatonin for sleep.
Well, that's what's supposed to happen…
Modern civilization with electricity, technology and urban city lights makes our brain think it's living under the Sun's zenith 24/7.
Artificial light inhibits melatonin production and prevents you from having a good night's sleep.
This IS the source of your poor sleep and lack of energy in the morning.
PROBLEM #2 - POOR SLEEP QUALITY
Looking at smart phones, staying on social media, holding screens in front of you around bed time are so underrated issues that reduce sleep quality.
To actually enter into the deepest stages of sleep, you want to block out all blue light after sunset.
· Install a software F.lux on your laptop to blur out the brightness
· Wear blue-blocking glasses at night
· Don't hold your smart phone near the bed in temptation of playing with it
· Wear a sleeping mask and ear plugs if needed
· Sleep in a cool environment with enough fresh air
Your sleep is a lot more important than nutrition or exercise because without it you literally degrade to pieces.
